21St Parliamentary Intelligence-Security Forum – 5G Security Challenges

Dr. Sohan Dasgupta expressed his honor at speaking before the Congress of Guatemala and extended his gratitude to Alejandro Giammattei for the invitation. He underscored the national security ramifications of transnational crime in the context of 5G networks. While 5G has the potential to enhance productivity and facilitate innovations such as smart cities and the Internet of Things, it also presents novel vulnerabilities within telecommunications infrastructure. Dr. Dasgupta cautioned that reliance on equipment from companies like Huawei could pose security risks if not adequately managed.

Furthermore, Dr. Dasgupta observed that technologies such as Artificial Intelligence and Cryptocurrency will increasingly converge with 5G, generating both economic prospects and regulatory challenges. He emphasized the necessity for robust oversight, international collaboration, and mechanisms such as the Committee on Foreign Investment in the United States to assess security risks. Dr. Dasgupta concluded that democratic nations must fortify secure infrastructure and public-private partnerships to safeguard freedom while propelling technological advancement.
