28th Parliamentary Intelligence-Security Forum – Semi-Conductors and Critical Minerals: Securing and Sustaining Global Supply Chains

Mr. Dave McMurtry discussed the importance of diversifying the global supply chain industry of lithium-ion batteries (lithium batteries). These batteries are essential parts used to manufacture cell phones, electronic vehicles and are alternative sustainable energy sources to petroleum. The worldwide production of Lithium batteries is dependent on China.

China became the dominant player in the global supply chain through strategic investments and financial support of key players. It controls 70% of the supply of lithium batteries. This has placed China in a political and economic advantage to influence national security and trade as it has the ability to manipulate market prices, restrict trade, and disrupt efforts to transition to clean energy.

Mr. McCurtry urged the diversification of global supply chains by investing in domestic production of lithium batteries, research and development to innovate battery technology, and in the capacity of countries to produce lithium batteries, and strengthening international collaboration to fulfill these objectives.
