21St Parliamentary Intelligence-Security Forum – Abusive practices in global economic expansion

Mr. Miloš Ivković, an international arbitrator and government advisor, cautioned that national security threats can manifest not only through military conflict but also through economic dependence. He elucidated that certain states employ loans, investments, and financial leverage to acquire control over critical infrastructure, energy sectors, and pivotal companies in other nations. Through predatory lending and debt dependency frequently associated with entities from China and Russia foreign entities may ultimately seize assets or exert influence over national decision-making processes. Mr. Ivković emphasized the imperative for governments to meticulously scrutinize foreign investments in strategic sectors, fortify legal frameworks, and collaborate with allies such as NATO and partners including the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, and the European Union. He concluded that robust alliances, legal oversight of investments, and intelligence sharing are indispensable to safeguarding national sovereignty and mitigating economic coercion.
