21St Parliamentary Intelligence-Security Forum – Remarks

President Alejandro Giammattei underscored the significant threats confronting Guatemala and the broader region, encompassing corruption, transnational crime, drug trafficking, and irregular migration. He underscored the paramount importance of intelligence systems in identifying risks and guiding government actions to safeguard national security and social stability.

Giammattei emphasized that Central America’s strategic location renders it a crucial transit route for drugs traversing from South America to North America, thereby amplifying the significance of regional and international cooperation, particularly with the United States, to combat trafficking, money laundering, and human smuggling. He further advocated for enhanced regional intelligence collaboration and the implementation of stringent laws against transnational crime.

Concluding, he unequivocally condemned the Russian invasion of Ukraine, affirming unwavering support for Ukraine’s sovereignty and emphasizing the paramount importance of global peace, respect for national integrity, and collective action against security threats.
