21St Parliamentary Intelligence-Security Forum – Remarks
Hon. John Katko addressed the significance of Central America to the national security of the United States. He elucidated that instability in the region culminating from corruption, transnational criminal organizations, drug trafficking, and restricted economic prospects directly impacts the United States, particularly through migration at the southern border.
Katko underscored that numerous individuals undertake the perilous journey northward due to economic hardship and the absence of stability in their home countries. He posited that enhancing economic development, political stability, and democratic governance in Central America can contribute to the reduction of migration in the long term.
Furthermore, he emphasized the necessity of combating drug cartels and transnational crime, noting that substantial quantities of drugs are intercepted at the U.S. southern border. Katko stressed that the U.S. government, encompassing the United States Congress and the Biden Administration, must concurrently secure the border and invest in enduring solutions such as economic development and strengthened regional cooperation.
Concluding, he cautioned against the escalating geopolitical influence in the region, particularly from China, and emphasized that the challenges confronting Central America are intricately linked to the security and stability of the United States.
